Recently American Dialect Society exposed some interesting data of a survey taken for 20th annual word of the year. And the word “Tweet” wins the race, which was voted a word of 2009. Further interesting results came out for word of decade, which is unsurprisingly “Google”. It might just look like capitalizing on the fame of new catchphrase, however you cannot expect a better result especially for the year 2009.

According to American Dialect Society

In its 20th annual words of the year vote, the American Dialect Society voted “tweet” (noun, a short message sent via the Twitter.com service, and verb, the act of sending such a message) as the word of the year and “ google” (a generic form of “Google,” meaning “to search the Internet) as its word of the decade.

Both words are, in the end, products of the Information Age, where every person has the ability to satisfy curiosity and to broadcast to a select following, both via the Internet, added Barrett, editor of column “among the new words”.

These two giant words had serious contender such as “blog” and “H1N1”, but competing with the latter was rather difficult. In the last millennium 1999, “Y2K” was voted as the winner.
