Britney Gets 10-20 Tweets Per Minute, While iPad Gets 7,000

Whether you enjoyed the launch of iPad on Wednesday or not, it is the conversation discussed all over Twitter. Retrevo Buzzmeter measured in the number of tweets made across the Internet on a per-minute basis, the number of tweets about “Apple tablet,” “iPad,” and related terms raised up to about ten times the traffic that the terms had generated before the launch, or between just 500 to 600 tweets per minute. That indicated peak activity levels as high as 7,000 Tweets per minute (TPM) during launch. Typical celebrity topics such as ‘Britney Spears’ get about 10-20 Tweets per minute on a sustained basis.

Just prior to the event we see a somewhat elevated activity compared to the much lower “baseline” of the night before the event. As the event gets underway at 10:00 AM and Steve Jobs takes the stage, we see a low level buzz that builds toward the formal announcement at 10:10. Activity drops off momentarily followed by the highest level of the event measuring 7,000 TPM which coincides with the hardware description at 10:30 AM. We then see several smaller bursts associated with more announcements until activity peaks again as the event was winding down.

It is not the appropriate time to predict whether iPad will be successful in impressing people, but of course we can figure out that the buzz created was huge and will make a difference to Apple as a whole.
