Digg Extends Login Options To Support OpenID Digg Extends Login Options, Supporting OpenID

Digg’s plan of revamping the site is now taking shape. The site is concentrating now more on the login part and says that a great focus is to support outside services as identity providers that will make easier for users to register with Digg. So it announced that new Digg website would support five providers, but sensibly a lot more as it is also adding OpenID support. Other provider would include Google, Facebook (already available), Twitter and Yahoo. The site is also announced support for Twitter’s upcoming @anywhere platform.

Bill Shupp at Digg wrote

@anywhere makes it easier for site owners to have rich integrations with Twitter without having to visit twitter.com. Digg is looking forward to supporting @anywhere in our upcoming release.

But that’s not all we’ve been up to on the third party integration front. Before we started down the path of re-writing our infrastructure last fall, we decided to take a fresh look at our login and registration options.

To determine which services to support, Digg took a survey asking users to choose their preferred login options. The survey proved was quite helpful with 14,000 people taking part in it, but the results are quite unsurprising. Google proved to be the most admired option, with 87.9 percent of users desiring it, followed by Facebook with 75.5 percent, Yahoo with 51.9 percent, and Twitter with 51.1 percent. Other options proved to be less popular and won’t be available by default.

Anyways, it is good to see OpenID option on Digg as it would also support less popular options like MySpace, AOL and myOpenID credentials for registration and log into Digg. The site says that a big importance was laid on openness, which is why it preferred using OpenID but also OAuth for the login system.
