Finally HTTPS On Gmail Is Now Default

https in gmail Finally HTTPS On Gmail Is Now Default

There has enough requests sent to Google by security researchers and privacy advocates for enabling HTTPS for Gmail to be default. In fact, Google rolled out this option way back in 2008 but then felt using https can make your mail slower since encrypted data doesn’t travel across the web as quickly as unencrypted data. And the option was dumped, but over last few month Google research on the same and planned to re-introduce the option for all users by default.

At Gmailblog, Sam Schillace, Gmail Engineering Director, wrote

We are currently rolling out default https for everyone. If you’ve previously set your own https preference from Gmail Settings, nothing will change for your account. If you trust the security of your network and don’t want default https turned on for performance reasons, you can turn it off at any time by choosing “Don’t always use https” from the Settings menu. Gmail will still always encrypt the login page to protect your password. Google Apps users whose admins have not already defaulted their entire domains to https will have the same option.

Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure aka HTTPS is till now been used to communicate over web securely and it has been standard for websites that contain secure data, such as payment details and personal information’s. So, even e-mail account need to go through this technology, because mostly users today save their sensitive data and personal information on mail account. This sounds like a good move by Google; however in case you do not want the option it can be removed anytime manually.
