Google Maps is amazing for getting practical information and of course satellite imagery can certainly be fun to play with. And Google last month thought of giving a third dimension to it, so came up with “Model Your Town” competition to get 3d Models for Google Earth. In other words, Google wanted people to recreate their towns in 3D for an opportunity to get a visit from Google team, free publicity and money for the public school system.

To display the progress, Google Lat Long Blog wrote

The Google Model Your Town Competition is running full-steam ahead with over 400 pins in the world map representing teams from six continents. From places like Cauquenes, Chile to Cape Town, South Africa to Suva City, Fiji to Alirajpur, Madhya Pradesh, India to Aberdeen, Scotland to Tallin, Estonia and Burlington, Iowa people have taken on the challenge of representing their communities

Tools to make the building are all provided by Google team and the easiest way to do so is using Google’s Building Maker – a web tool to make modeling easy. In case the contender does not have Building Maker then Google offer SketchUp – a free 3D modeling software. The dead line for the competition is March 1st of 2010.
