It seems like Facebook is not the only one to get Twitter greedy, Google as well looks to be catching up the pace and planning to launch tools that would enable users to view their status updates and even shared links right from their Gmail account. And the great news is that Google is planning to introduce this feature in less than a week.

According to WSJ

Google Inc. is taking a swipe at Facebook Inc. and Twitter Inc. with a new feature that makes it easier for users of Gmail to view media and status updates shared online by their friends. Google could announce the new Gmail feature as soon as this week, said people familiar with the matter. A Google spokeswoman declined to comment. The change adds a module to the Gmail screen that will display a stream of updates from individuals a user chooses to connect with, said one of these people. It is a format popularized by Facebook and Twitter.

The new Gmail feature would add a news feed of sorts to the webmail client that would further help users carry on with the activities of their contacts coming from Gmail itself, other Google services, YouTube and Picasa for example, but also third-party services. It would as well let them to post status updates and share content through Gmail. The webmail client already has a limited status update tool of sorts for the integrated chat. But there’s no word whether Twitter or Facebook status updates are integrated which is the most important question. Let’s wait and watch!

Update: The new product is Google Buzz
