Now we see another sign of it with “Facebook” being the number one search term on all major search engines. On third place we have “facebook login” or “facebook.com” says a recent study from Hitwise.

Report from Hitwise reads -

Experian Hitwise announced today that the search term Facebook was the top U.S. search conducted in the four weeks ending March 27, 2010. Overall, Facebook related terms accounted for eight searches across the three top 10 lists,

Yahoo! related terms accounted for six spots while MySpace terms accounted for four searches across the search engines. Other search terms that were among the top 10 searches for all three search engines include youtube, facebook login, craigslist and yahoo mail, it added.

Over all Yahoo grabs a decent pick with three searches “Yahoo Mail, Yahoo and Yahoo.com among the top 10. Yahoo is doing pretty well on Bing by taking seventh place on Bing. Another interesting thing to know is that term “Google” is the second most popular query on Bing. Other search terms that were among the top 10 searches for all three search engines include youtube, and craigslist.
<table

With more number comes more competition and so is happening with Social Media sites as well. There are many social network sites emerged, yet among them Facebook and YouTube are on top and steadily taking over the social web. According to a data revealed by ComScore and shared by Mashable says that Facebook now has 41% of Social Media Traffic.

According to the survey shared by Mashable -

In addition to showing massive and continued traffic growth throughout 2009 and the beginning of 2010, Facebook and YouTube (YouTube) continued to capture the highest volume of social web traffic. Twitter (Twitter) also garnered a ton of mainstream attention, helping the company increase the number of visitors to its site by fivefold over the course of the year.

Taking a look at the unique visitors charts, we see the widespread migration from MySpace (MySpace) to Facebook even more clearly. As of March 2010, Facebook traffic made up 41% of all traffic on a list of popular social destinations. MySpace was in second place, capturing around 24% of traffic. Gmail (Gmail) had 15%, and Twitter had 8%. However, during the same period in 2009, MySpace was in the lead with 38% of site visits over Facebook’s 33%.

The charts posted on Mashable clearly explains the changes in social media traffic between March 2009 and March 2010, and a quick look at them would further offer more details on the difference between the amount of traffic various online destinations enjoyed in the time frame.
<table

And the most common thing happens at these social networks is “sharing” – links, data, videos, status and everything else possible online. Among these Facebook made its way easier by introducing Facebook Connect – the easy login system, but now there is some competition from newcomers XAuth by Meebo.

According to ReadWriteWeb, there’s going to be an announcement about XAuth sometime today from its consortium of backers/developers–a group that includes Google, Yahoo, Meebo and MySpace. RRW calls it “Facebook Connect but for every other social network” because it essentially works in the same manner as Connect does, but it’s cross-platform, and has hooks into multiple social networking systems that you may be a member of. This is important because, lest you forget, Facebook isn’t yet the 100% be-all and end-all social network, and others still thrive–here in Portugal, for example, many youngsters prefer Hi5 to Facebook, or at least have profiles on both.

XAuth.org website explains.

XAuth is an open platform for extending authenticated user services across the web. Participating services generate a browser token for each of their users. Publishers can then recognize when site visitors are logged in to those online services and present them with meaningful, relevant options

XAuth is actually an substantiation standard system, similar to OAuth, for instance, enabling users to log into any website that implements it with any account from a service that supports it. But it has more to offer, its real target, though the people behind XAuth are careful to dismiss that, is Facebook Connect.

On the other hand, where Facebook Connect works only with and for Facebook, XAuth is open to anyone. The idea is to have website owners execute just one protocol that would then act just the sharing and login options applicable to a user. It would further also enable sites to share information in the background, even things like friends lists and all sorts of other data. This not only opens up a ton of functionality, but also a lot of potential privacy issues.
<table

Most important is that Yahoo is now more interested in becoming a social place. It initially allowed users tojoined hands with Twitter, but now it is coming up with a new idea. Now Yahoo allow you to comment and even “like” the updated status on it.

Tony Cheng Software Engineer at Yahoo <a

Specifically, you can now comment or ‘Like’ Updates that you see on the What’s New page in Yahoo! Mail. Say, for example, that your friend rates a movie on Yahoo! Movies. Now by clicking on ‘Like’, you can show your approval,” he added.

You already know why these like and comment button exists if you have ever used Facebook. Clicking on Like would add you to the list of people who liked that specific message. You could further remove the like at any point in the future, if you desire. Click on Comment and you would see a small box where you can write your comment. It’s fun, try out!
<table

Of course it is widely popular in US, but now people are signing up for more on this informative network from outside US. Fairly responsible for this is Twitter’s rising internationalization effort, but also the stagnating development in the US.

Matt Sanford, lead engineer of Twitter’s International team wrote –

Twitter’s first users were the early employees and their friends, largely based around our offices in San Francisco. Today we are a global information network, with a robust developer ecosystem and a website available in six languages. Our users on Twitter are even more geographically diverse — we’re proud to report that over 60% of registered Twitter accounts come from outside the US.

Twitter still have long way to go when compared to Facebook. Facebook actually has bigger percentage of international users about 70% of its 450 Million users. On the stats, Twitter does not disclose how many registered or active users it has by now. In other countries, like India and Columbia, politicians, celebrities and other public figures that have started using the Twitter encouraged a big interest from the general public.

Facebook became the Biggest Site In United States overtaking Google and now it is the most searched brand in US, which was Google earlier. According to Hitwise statistics the term “Facebook” is the trendiest among famous web-related brands for search engine queries starting from the United States. Pulling data from all chief search providers, the Hitwise report says that the word “Facebook” has been found most times among other terms in the root of search queries.

The Top Ten Search Brands statistics explains, Facebook achieved a 2.80% search query share, in comparison with Google’s 2.40%. That’s 16% more than for the Mountain View-based company. On number 3 we have Yahoo holding 1.60% and 4th place goes to Craigslist with 1.10%. Also interesting to note is that Amazon being a great brand in itself just has 0.10% of search query. However it is quite surprising to note that Twitter is no where in the list of Top 10.

Overtaking Google is obviously great news for Facebook as by now Google has great services such as Maps, Docs, Apps, Translate, News etc. Another interesting fact exposed by the Hitwise report is that the firm registered 10,673 unique variations on the “Facebook” root term over the past week alone. Good Luck Facebook!
<table

As you may have heard, Yahoo! is putting a big focus on bringing you more social features, and this evening Yahoo! Mail is rolling out another handy way to connect with your friends. href="http://www.facebook.com/honeytechblog">Become a Fan” will soon be replaced with the team “Like”. So now instead of becoming fan of something they like, users would actually choose to like a Facebook page so as to follow it. Media Memo has got some ‘classified’ Facebook documents aimed at advertisers that advise them of the looming changes. Facebook states the new expression makes sense as it’s more reliable with other elements on the site simplifying things for users.

Email notification received by Mediamemo reads -

People will soon connect with your Brand Pages by clicking “Like” rather than “Become a Fan.” People already “Like” their friends’ status updates, photos and links everyday. In fact, people click “Like” almost two times more than they click “Become a Fan” everyday.

“I believe this will result in gaining more connections to pages since our research has shown that some users would be more comfortable with the term ‘Like.’ The goal is to get the most user connections so that you can have ongoing conversations in the news feeds of as many users as possible,” it explained

Obviously the reason behind introducing the like button would be to encourage more people to become fans of various Facebook pages on site. This augurs well for the brands using the Pages, which, ultimately, augurs well for Facebook. Well, the change is expected to be live in next few weeks!
<table
