Twitter Brief On Twitter’s Long awaited Ad Platform

Twitter’s so-called upcoming ad platform is been on a major hype for quite some time now. Although there is no real information on how the company plans to carry out ads on the site but, all this while Twitter said ads would be fascinating, non-traditional and really cool. No clue on how cool or fascinating the ads will be, but truly speaking they are search ads. Means, those ads will be displayed when doing a search on the site.

Peter Kafka from allthingsd shared some very broad strokes about it –

  • Ads will be tied to Twitter searches, in the same way that Google’s (GOOG) original ads were. So a search for, say, “laptop,” may generate an ad for Dell (DELL). The ads will only show up in search results, which means users who don’t search for something won’t see them in their regular Twitterstreams.
  • The ads will use the Twitter format–140 or fewer characters–and will be distributed via the third-party software and services that use Twitter’s API. The services will have the option of displaying the ads, and Twitter will share revenue with those that do.
  • Twitter will work with ad agencies and buyers to seed the program, but plans on moving to a self-serve model like Google’s, down the road.

The search kind of ads are already been tried by Google and the company proved it to be quite successful. Of course there will be more changes and addition to the above given list, yet it would be difficult to say how far Twitter can bring revenue.
