You may not believe but there are still users on Internet who do not have a Google account and signing up of one could be deal with lot of hassle. With that in mind, Google is now making it easier for Yahoo users to create a Google account.

Eric Sachs, Senior Product Manager, Google Security wrote –

How many times have you created a new account at a website and seen a message that said: “Thank you for creating an account. To activate your new account, please access your email and click the verification URL provided.”

Even though you just want to start using the website, this lengthy process requires you to manually perform a whole bunch of steps”

To make this process simpler, we’re now using an Internet standard called OpenID which is supported by several email providers, including Yahoo!. Instead of the process above, Yahoo! users who sign up with Google see the page below with a button that sends them to Yahoo! for verification.

Both Microsoft and Yahoo have more email users than Gmail, so here we know what does this announcement is for. Once you creating a Google account using a Yahoo email, you would have the option of verifying the email address by simply logging into Yahoo.

Google relies on OpenID and OAuth for the verification process, which both Google and Yahoo support. For now, the feature is only restricted to Yahoo, but Google says it will expand it to other sites using OpenID and Microsoft seems the next understandable target.

Google is having a press event this Wednesday and seems like it is a major search even for which Google is sending out invites. Although the giant does not declare any much details of it, but some of the Google’s biggest names in search will be present to take over the event.

The invite that was sent to Search Engine Land reads –

We invite you to join us on Wednesday, September 8, to share our latest technological innovation and to get an inside look at the evolution of Google search. Speakers include:

Marissa Mayer, VP, Search Products & User Experience

Johanna Wright, Director of Product Management

Ben Gomes, Distinguished Engineer

Othar Hansson, Senior Staff Software Engineer

It’s an event you won’t want to miss.

Google is not declaring anything more on this, but the speculation is that there won’t be any big announcements though it is possible there would be some new products and new features on display. The event would probably focus on what Google Search has been doing so far and some of the general directions.

The Google people present at the press event might serve as a hint to what might be unveiled; most are caught up with what the user sees rather than the technology behind it. Marissa Mayer, senior vice president of search and user experience is one of the first Google employees and requires no introduction. Ben Gomes, listed as Distinguished Engineer, is billed as Google’s search czar.

Google recently made an announcement of its updated privacy policy, which will come in effect from October 3rd 2010. You will not find any change in the actual policy as such, but of course the text has been simplified and few bits are added to make it easier to read and comprehend by a common user.

Mike Yang, Associate General Counsel at Google, wrote.

Long, complicated and lawyerly—that’s what most people think about privacy policies, and for good reason. Even taking into account that they’re legal documents, most privacy policies are still too hard to understand,

So we’re simplifying and updating Google’s privacy policies. To be clear, we aren’t changing any of our privacy practices; we want to make our policies more transparent and understandable,” he added.

The biggest change towards simplifying the privacy policies is eradicating some of them. Most of Google’s products and services are governed Google Privacy Policy. Some, however, also have their own supplementary individual policies. Since there is a lot of repetition, Google is deleting 12 of these product-specific policies.

Next change is to the main policy that is getting a rewrite. Some of the legal terminology is gone and some outmoded parts have been removed. New content has been added as well, where further details were required, but, overall, the new text is smaller and easier to understand. The new privacy policy is available for review and would be implemented starting October 3rd. Google is providing a FAQ for the changes which should cover any reservations.

Microsoft has been hyping this big feature for quite some time for IE 9, but looks like Google is again ahead of Microsoft. GPU acceleration might come to Google Chrome 7 before Internet Explored 9 appears. The latest Chromium builds could now send some of the description directly to the GPU, which result in better performance and less CPU strain. The best part here is that the GPU acceleration is not just limited to 3D content; some 2D operations could as well take advantage of the new feature.

Vangelis Kokkevis, Software Engineer at Google, wrote -

For some time now, there’s been a lot of work going on to overhaul Chromium’s graphics system,

New APIs and markup like WebGL and 3D CSS transforms are a major motivation for this work, but it also lets Chromium begin to take advantage of the GPU to speed up its entire drawing model, including many common 2D operations such as compositing and image scaling, he added.

At its core, this graphics work relies on a new process (yes, another one) called the GPU process. The GPU process accepts graphics commands from the renderer process and pushes them to OpenGL or Direct3D (via ANGLE),” he explained.

The original technology is now in place. If you run the recent Chromium build with the –enable-accelerated-compositing flag, then you would notice the GPU process running along with all of the regular ones. This is the process that would further handle all of the hardware acceleration, be it 2D or 3D, while yet keeping the web pages locked away in the sandbox. Chromium teams also desire to move even more of the rendering off the CPU and onto the GPU that should result in a vital performance boost.

Google had said to be working on incorporating Voice with its existing VoIP service and Gmail. As noted by CNET, Google could be ready to turn Gmail into a communications hub by adding the ability to make phone calls from the Google Chat interface. So that is no more a rumor, Google has not only made an official announcement about it but also made it live in US.

Robin Schriebman, Software Engineer at Google, wrote.

Gmail voice and video chat makes it easy to stay in touch with friends and family using your computer’s microphone and speakers. But until now, this required both people to be at their computers, signed into Gmail at the same time,”

Given that most of us don’t spend all day in front of our computers, we thought, ‘wouldn’t it be nice if you could call people directly on their phones?’ Starting today, you can call any phone right from Gmail,” he added.

However, the new feature is still available only for US users, although Google says that it plans to launch in internationally soon. The most interesting part here is the rates offered by Google, international calls will be billed at low rates, starting at $0.02 per minute. The feature is included with the Gmail Chat app that now comprises a phone dialer enabling users to call any phone. You don’t need a Google Voice account to use the new call feature in Gmail. However, if you do have one your Voice number will be used as your caller ID.

Video site numbers are mostly same every month, apart from few pieces of information that are interesting to know. But soon comScore changed its way of counting videos and that affected Hulu the most. The site used to be the second largest video content in US and now there has been a big drop, because more than 80 percent of video clips on Hulu are ads that are not considered.

According to comScore -

Google Sites, driven primarily by video viewing at YouTube.com, ranked as the top online video content property with 143.2 million unique viewers, followed by Yahoo! Sites with 55.1 million viewers. Facebook.com jumped one position to capture the #3 spot with 46.6 million viewers,

Google Sites had the highest number of overall viewing sessions with 1.9 billion and average time spent per viewer at 283 minutes, or 4.7 hours. Hulu also had high viewer engagement with an average of 158 minutes (or 2.6 hours) per viewer, it continued.

YouTube is the clear leader in all ways except in terms of ads. In fact, YouTube only comes in the fifth place when it comes to video ads, just 4.6 per visitor in July, for a total of almost 220 million ads. Hulu leads in this department with 27.9 video ads per viewer, adding up to 783 million ads.

But sensibly speaking, one must also consider the length of video posted. Hulu hosts TV shows and each video is at least several tens of minutes long. And for each of those clips, Hulu will serve several video ads, which does sound obvious!

Beyond doubts Google is a technology company, but the purpose of it is much higher than what is visible. The green energy supporter is now interested in opening a Think Tank on global policies in New York. With the hope to incorporate technology solutions to solve world’s problem, Google is hiring Washington technology insider Jared Cohen. He is now said to be working on Google Ideas, a technology think tank to be revealed later this year.

According to Fortune

Cohen was hired during the Bush Administration by Condoleezza Rice’s State Department’s policy planning staff at age 24, just after getting his M.Phil at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. Since then, he has become an incredibly well connected and well traveled diplomat versed in ’21st Century Statecraft’. He’s also written a book called Children of Jihad where he advocates for the use of technology for social upheaval in the Middle East and elsewhere.

We’ve been told that Cohen is busy building a new entity for Google which is tentatively called Google Ideas. Ideas is a global initiatives ‘think tank’ office inside of Google and will be run out of New York. Cohen will be working for Google full time by this fall. His job will be to spearhead initiatives to apply technology solutions to problems faced by the developing world.

He now serves under Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is said to be aware of his move to Google. While he hasn’t left the administration yet, he is already working on initial plans for the think tank. Cohen’s role at Google isn’t exactly clear or the role of the Google Ideas project for that matter. In large he will focus on ways technology could help developing countries and how the web can enrich the lives of those struggling with poverty. Neither Google nor Cohen has commented on this matter.

In spite of several competitors in the web industry, Blogger still has its charm. And if you are one among blogger then here is a good news for you. Yes, Blogger is turning 11 this month and there is a party organized for the worldwide bloggers. What actually Blogger is conducting is an old-fashioned blogger meet-up for users across the world. So, you can get in touch with bloggers close to, locate a suitable location, go out and enjoy. Blogger is even supplying the print-out party hats.

Seth Shamban from Blogger wrote -

Last year, Blogger turned ten. We were excited to present you with a (small-but-mighty) bounty of gifts, a token to commemorate all of your contributions over the years. For Blogger’s 11th birthday, we’re hosting the first ever Blogger global birthday party!

We’ll keep it simple—we set the date, you set the parties and Meetup Everywhere will help facilitate (free of charge!). Through the wonder of Meetup Everywhere, you’ll be able to find other bloggers in your area and either join a celebration that has already been set up or start a new party local to you,” he explained.

Meetup.com is the way for blogger to organize this birthday party worldwide. Few events have been created so far and the number is growing fast. Well, there is no size limit as long as Blogger is concerned, and it is also supplying a downloadable party pack. The PDF document has printable templates for the things you will require for the party, name tags, registration list, party hats and even directional signs for the people to find the “fiesta.”

You are free to create a new party in your town on the Meetup page or join the existing ones. So don’t miss out on this if you love blogging, as you never know who you could meetup with!

Google AdSense is one such program that every web master loves and now the search giant is adding some spice to it. Google has just announced to revamp some of the AdSense ad units by launching a new layout that will make them easier to read and understand. It may sound like a usual do-up but for sure this change will make the ads stand out along with making the actual info simpler to spot up.

Amy Wu – AdSense Product Manager at Google says –

We’re excited to announce a revamped design of three of our AdSense for content ad units! After analyzing publisher site layouts and reviewing requests around the world, we decided to make our formats more space-efficient and visually pleasing by changing the layout of the text,

We spent a lot of time experimenting with different possibilities, and we’re starting with changes to the following ad units: Leaderboard (728×90) – the title, description, and URL are now arranged in rows instead of columns (except in the case when only one ad is showing); Medium and large rectangles (300×250, 336×280) – the URL is now in the same line as the title,” she explained.

Further interesting to know is that redesigned ad units performed extremely well during testing. That’s reason Google planned to introduce them. Of course you can trust on Google when it comes to testing and yes it does carry lengthy process. You can find new ads rolling out in next few weeks.

In a press conference Monday, Google and Verizon joint hands together confirming their commitment to “an open Internet” purported net neutrality. This concept explains that Internet service providers (ISPs) supposed to treat all online properties equally. In simple terms, users can access honeytechblog.com as fast as BBC, Twitter or Facebook. The sites will get no special treatment for their popularity or content.

According to Google Public Policy blog -

The original architects of the Internet got the big things right. By making the network open, they enabled the greatest exchange of ideas in history. By making the Internet scalable, they enabled explosive innovation in the infrastructure.

It is imperative that we find ways to protect the future openness of the Internet and encourage the rapid deployment of broadband. Verizon and Google are pleased to discuss the principled compromise our companies have developed over the last year concerning the thorny issue of “network neutrality.”

The Verizon-Google Legislative Framework Proposal to lawmakers stressed that wireline Internet (non-wireless broadband) users should have “access to all legal content on the Internet” without discrimination. This “nondiscrimination” policy bans all prioritization (including paid prioritization) of Internet traffic. “In addition to not blocking or degrading of Internet content and applications, wireline broadband providers also could not favor particular Internet traffic over other traffic,” states the proposal.

“Under the principles, there is no prioritization of traffic that comes from Google over the Internet, period,” said Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg today, point-blank. The companies also asked for FCC regulation in this regard, proposing that violators of the policy should be penalized up to $2 million on a case-by-case basis.

Many times while making a documentary or report, you need a picture of famous persons. Google search is an easiest way to find images but sometimes it doesn’t give you the satisfactorily result. Most of the images are either group photograph or image having full body part (not face only).

Iface Search is a nice website with easy to use interface. It is powered by Google and Bing search engine. Open the website and type the name of a person in the given search box and hit the “Let’s search” button. The site fetches images from the search engines.

There are four kinds of layouts available: image flow, classic, polaroid HD and polaroid low resolution. The algorithm of the search is so nice that it gives only faces in the result. Also it pulls only photos of a face of searched personality from the web. Great, isn’t it.

Polaroid is a nice feature that display the images in a collage. When you click on it, it will immediately show you the result as a polaroid photo. You can slide the photos with the help of arrows.

I tried searching my own image and it displayed all the Google and Bing search indexed images. This service is free to use and no sign up is required. Also with its neat interface and amazing search algorithm, it is worth a try.

While searching on the internet, many times I need both image and web search results. Google doesn’t allow to show all the results on the same page (with some exceptions) therefore I open the web interface and then the image interface to see the results separately. Switching from web result to image results takes extra time.

Then I found one amazing service known as Nibbo, a Google powered search engine that lets you see all kind of search results (web, image, news) on one interface. You can also see the hot trends of US on the search page (probably they fetch the data from Google trends.)

When you perform any search on this site, it fetches all the data from Google and other services such as Wikipedia and Twitter. All the results are divided into category. The middle box is for web search results. On the right sidebar, you’ll get image search result at the top and then video results, news results, Wikipedia and Twitter search results.

Some other nice feature of this website is search suggestion feature and you don’t need to click on the next button to go to the second page of the search result. Just scroll down the page with the help of mouse. It also allows you to share your results to various social sites and via email.

There is a settings button at the top by which you can add blogs, feeds, books and many other search parameters. By using this service you can easily create custom search engine and save it so that you can use it from any computer. There is an option to reorder or remove search engines.

Check out Nibbo to search smartly on Google.

Blink is an alert type of software which informs user about all the calls that he or she had received even if were away at that time. Using this Android software one can be very sure that no call goes without being noticed. This useful software was recently released and can be used in all Android platforms. The developers are keen in improving the software and currently version 1.5 updated on April 30th of Blink is also available. Blink has a power user interface, easy to use and also allows the user to customize the alerts as per their needs. Technically speaking, Blink just extends the standard LED alert system that comes in built with the OS. In addition to the standard system, Blink offers additional facilities for the user to customize the LED alert for incoming calls, SMS or MMs and for missed calls.

Interesting Features of Blink

New SMS & MMS LED Color & Frequency Adjustment

Missed Call LED Color & Frequency Adjustment

New Phone Call LED Color & Frequency Adjustment

Low Battery LED Color & Frequency Adjustment

Low System Memory LED Color & Frequency Adjustment

Working on the software is quite simple and it also further allows users to customize their settings of their mobile and add more LED alerts that are suitable to them. This customization can be made based on the color or the frequency of blinking. You are allowed to customize LED color for SMS/MMS, Incoming Call/Missed Call, and even Low Battery/Memory. There are more than dozens of flashing colors from which the user can choose the desired one. Thus with the help of these colorful alerts blink ensures that users are kept informed of all incoming calls, SMS and missed calls even if their Android phone is muted or kept in silent mode. Above all Blink is available for free and it can be downloaded directly from the Android market. So go ahead, stay in touch with all your calls and SMSs using Blink!
