Apart from all the features the best thing that i liked is its scenic and eye catchy GNOME Desktop look which also loads with the following features

A new instant messaging client.

improved file management and toolbars

A built-in time tracker.

A better support for multiple monitor use with the ability to set screen resolution by monitor.

Some of the New Features in Ubuntu 8.10

Gear up for New 3G Support

For constant connectivity public WiFi has limitations. Improvements to the network manager in Ubuntu 8.10 makes it simple to detect and connect to 3G networks and manage connectivity. This connectivity is delivered through an inbuilt 3G modem, through ‘dongle’ support, through a mobile phone or through Bluetooth. It is a complex environment that Ubuntu 8.10 simplifies through a single interface and the auto-detection of many of the most popular devices.

Write Ubuntu to and Install from a USB Drive

In my previous post How to run Linux directly from Windows i post about how to install / Run linux from USB Drive but here in new version of Ubuntu this feature has been made available to users with full portability.A simple application in Ubuntu will allow users to write Ubuntu to a USB drive, even a modified version of Ubuntu with their data on it, so it can be carried everywhere to plug in and use on any machine.

Loads with Guest Sessions just like Windows

Their is a default “Guest” login in the Windows Operating Systems and Yes now Ubuntu reloads with Guest logins from all your friends who might use your personal system.Do you know? Guest sessions allow users to lock down a session easily so a guest can use the full system without interference with programs or data. Now you can easily shares the system even with your girlfriends without bothering about the fears of catching your private data.

BBC Channels are loaded in default

Now you can enjoy the freedom of technology in the form of free and updated BBC podcasts.Yes, Ubuntu media players “Totem Movie Player and Rhythmbox” have a menu of selected content from the broadcaster that is free and fresh like air. It have a different sorts of video, radio and podcasts and available in high quality, much of it playable using non-proprietary codecs. Note: It have constantly updated contents via the corporation’s stream and will vary dependent on location.

Eye Candy Gnome 2.24 Desktop Environment

Ubuntu 8.10 reloads with eye candy features of the GNOME desktop environment . As described above new features include a new instant messaging client, a built-in time tracker, , improved file management and toolbars plus better support for multiple monitor use with the ability to set screen resolution by monitor.

Recently while using Ubuntu Studio i feels the need of Adobe Air and other applications so i tried to installed Air for my Linux box. Here is the simple process to install it on Linux (test ed on Ubuntu Studio 8.04)

Download the Adobe air from here ( http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/air/linux/adobeair_linux_b1_091508.bin)

Save the file in the Home ( file name will be adobeair_linux_b1_091508.bin )

Go to the start and open a terminal ( Applications–> Accessories –> Terminal)

Now from Terminal Window go to the director where we saved Adobe AIR installer (/home/):cd /home/

From terminal run

ls -l

Normally the downloaded files are not have enough privilege so we will make it compatible for installing, for this we will increase its permission level by

chmod 755 filename

or

chmod 755 adobeair_linux_b1_091508.bin

Now Adobe Air is ready for installation, use this command to proceed further
./filename
or

./adobeair_linux_b1_091508.bin

Now you can easily install AdobeAIR

You can easily install ADOBEAIR applications on your LINUX BOX.

Note: If you want to uninstall an AIR application, open a terminal again (Applications > Accessories > Terminal).

In this example I will show how to uninstall Spaz.

To find out the correct name of the Spaz package, run

dpkg --list | grep -i spaz

for example output as

honeytech@honeytech:~$ dpkg --list | grep -i webkut
ii net.tw.air.webkut.7c34f9ba9fad6689faabbe85f1f5b46ba5a32de5.1 1.2.1
honeytech@honeytech:~$

Hence the package we have to remove is
net.tw.air.webkut.7c34f9ba9fad6689faabbe85f1f5b46ba5a32de5.1 1.2.1

Note: If you face any problems in the above installation then feel free to bother me via comments. Comments are open for you.

Save and restart the modem/router. On WA1003A modem/router, this can be done under ‘Tools->System Commands’ It will take 2-3 minutes for the box to come up again

Below is the full detail of all the methods in brief follow here

Wireless security

In admin console, ‘Advanced->Wireless Security’ set security to WEP.

Add a 64 bit authentication key, 10 characters in hex format i.e 0-9 and A-F

Add this key to wireless NIC configuration.

$ sudo iwconfig wlan0 key A1B2C3D4E5

Save settings in router and restart it. Reactivate the card, probably using ifdown and ifup

One stop instruction for wireless NIC:

Add following lines to /etc/network/interfaces

iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.10
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
wireless-essid WA1003A
wireless-key A1B2C3D4E5

auto eth0

Most of the steps can also be done from menu System->Administration->Network in GUI

(Note: Most of the instructions are based on the document at http://www.calcuttatelephones.com/dataoneinstall/bb008.html)

Alternative

Note: Ubuntu would trigger the connection if configured this way.(Router on -> Ubuntu on -> Connected)

Make sure your Ethernet card is configured

Open a Terminal: Applications->Accessories->Terminal

Enter sudo pppoeconf

Follow instructions on the screen. The defaults are fine for most cases. Make sure you enter your username and password carefully. Beware : The password will be visible on the screen.

Todo

What about USB connections to the computer ?

Sify

Obtaining the sify dialer

Download the client from the same place where you got the windows client. This should ideally be http://202.144.65.70:8090 , and at the time of writing the file is can be found at http://210.18.11.199:81/bbandclient/sifyconnect-1.3-bin.tar.gz.

Installing the dialer

Untar the the dialer using your favorite untar program , or do this :

$ tar -xzvf sifyconnect-1.3-bin.tar.gz

Then run the following commands as root :

$ cd sifyconnect-1.3-bin/
$ bash install.sh

Using the dialer

Run the following commands :

$ sifyd
$ sifyconnect -l

This will prompt you for your username & password , give them. Once you do that your as good as logged in , you can now close the terminal and use the internet.

Autologin

Want to automatically login onto sify everytime you switch on the computer. Just write a shell script. Just make a file (something like sify.sh) in “/usr/bin/”. The scriptwill be something like this :

$ sifyd
$ echo -e 'accountnamenpassword' | sifyconnect -l

To start this everytime the computer switches on add the following lines to the /etc/rc.local file (untested):

$ bash sify.sh

Troubleshooting

Sometimes the client on trying to log in says something like –

“Login failed : Get the latest version of the client”

This is because after upgrading it’s protocol in some places, sify has discontinoued support for the old protocol . It has also stopped development of it’s GNU/linux and Mac clients , so you might have to call sify customer care and tell them your problem. They probably just allow you IP and account to use the old protocol It took them about 8 hours to fix the problem when I had it.

Another problem that might occur would be like –

“-bash: /etc/init.d/sifybb: No such file or directory”

If that ever happens all you have to do is Broadband_Howto#Installing_the_dialer again.

PPPoE (non bridged)

In this mode, your router will connect as sson as it is switched on. If you are billed for time connected then you need to use bridged mode

Go to System->Administartion->Networking and make sure you have configured an ip (192.168.1.2, for example) and have set your DNS (supplied by Airtel) and Default gateway (192.168.1.1). If your router is handling DHCP then you needn’t configure an ip.

Navigate to http://192.168.1.1

Enter the username and password (default is admin for both)

Click Run Wizard

Click Next

Select your time zone (+5:30)

Click Next

Select <PPPoE/PPPoA Choose this option if your ISP uses PPPoE/PPPoA. (For most DSL users)>

Click Next

Enter your username and password. VPI = 1, VCI = 32, Connection Type = PPPoE LLC

Click restart

This tutorial will show you how to mount NTFS and FAT partitions in ubuntu
(1) How To mount a NTFS partion in ubuntu ?
For mounting NTFS we are going to use one small tool called NTFS-3G this is very powerfull and
simple tool.
The NTFS-3G driver is an open source, freely available NTFS driver for Linux with read and write
support. It provides safe and fast handling of the Windows XP file systems.
You need to edit the sources.list file using the following command
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and add the following repositories which is suitable for you
If you are running Ubuntu Dapper enter the following lines save and exit the file
deb http://givre.cabspace.com/ubuntu/ dapper main main-all
deb http://ntfs-3g.sitesweetsite.info/ubuntu/ dapper main main-all
deb http://flomertens.keo.in/ubuntu/ dapper main main-all
If you are running Ubuntu Edgy replace dapper with edgy
Go to senaptic package manager and reload the repos and install ntfs-3g
Configuring ntfs-3g
Now you need to use the following command to determine all the available partitions
sudo fdisk -l
Now you need to configure your NTFS partitions in /etc/fstab file before doing any changes in
/etc/fstab file we will take a backup of this file using the following command (Highly Recommended)
sudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.bak
Now you need to create a directory where do you mount your windows partitions in this example i ma
creating windows directory
sudo mkdir /media/windows
If you want to mount /dev/hda1 is your windows partition you need to enter the following line in
/etc/fstab file
Page 2
/dev/ /media/ ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0
You need to replace your partition and mount point with your details
Example
/dev/hda3 /media/windows ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0
save and exit the file
If you want to mount as read only you need to enter the following line in /etc/fstabfile
/dev/hda3 /media/windows ntfs-3g ro,locale=en_US.utf8,uid=1000 0 0
If You want to change your locale option you need to run the following command in a terminal to
know which one is supported by your system.
locale -a
Now if you want these new chnages to take effect there are two options one is you can simply reboot

your machine and the second one is without rebooting you need to run the following commands

To unmount
sudo umount -a partition-name

Mounting Fat Partition
1) Create a folder on the desktop suppose fatdrive (this is just a foldeer name )
2) Open the terminal type the following command
3) sudo -s
4) give the password
5) mount -a /dev/< fat partition to be mounted > <desktop folder name> -t vfat umask 0022
6) fat drive would be mounted
