Today i attends the talk of Richard stallman who is know as the Father Of Free Software Movement.The talk is based on “The Danger Of Software Patents” and held in the seminar hall of Indian Institute Of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi).
Summary Of talk up to my understanding
Patents is very dangerous for software developer and programmer.If any body(programmer) developed a software and wants to patent it then their are already existing giants like MICROSOFT,IBM etc who can crush you because they have thousands and thousands backup of existing patents.How they can sue you for being a programmer or developer?
If you developed a software that have few unique specifications and when you report for
patents suppose against IBM then IBM says i already have softwares with your this
feature no 1
feature no 2 etc etc so you are going to be sued by them for coding their patents software.
Now what would you do?
Either sell this by signing a agreement with IBM or to pay millions (which you can’t afford)
In this way Patents in Software is massive massacre of programmers and software developers.The bigger giants get more bigger and richer and you will suffer with unending agony.So come forward to support the Anti patents motions in Softwares.
More over he described that Copyright and Patents are two absolutely different thing having nothing in common.Like Copyright is protecting authors but doesn’t hurt any honest person.On the other hand Patents are 20-year monopolies that the government grants on broad and general ideas. At the end of the Richards talk i together with all the member of ILUG-D(Indian Linux User Group Delhi) Gora Mohanty,Niyan Bhusan,Raj Mathur,Andew Lyn,Gaurav Mishra,Triveni and Rajesh Lalvani went to barista where we discuss about the next FREED.in.Its so funny when niyam open his mustered ketchup and spread it all over the table with most impact on Adrew’s shirts.
