When In Rome , Do As The Catalans Do!

Confused???.. I am so sorry.Actually St. Ambrose’s phrase is “When in Rome , Do as the Romans do”.But I feel whosoever saw that encounter will agree with me that the Catalan giants re-phrased it .

It was an epic night with several acmes.A city built on hope and drama – Rome.An arena by the beautiful river Tiber – Stadio Olimpico.Two best sides in club football – ManU and Barca.Two best players in the world – Ronaldo and Messi.Two managers – one iconic and the other, icon in the making.Most importantly Aadi and I on the same side for the first time in one year after our sides lost in the semis .

The buildup to the finals had summoned overwhelmingly generous speculations of this and that happening.And it proved to be one where if not all some did come true.Manchester United began in a grand style and the Catalans for the first 5 minutes looked out of sorts.Ronaldo in his own mercurial manner rocked Victor Valdes with his one of a kind free kick and Barca survived.On the other hand Messi was still lingering in the shadow of tall and strong ManU defence.

I admire football simply because of its ‘you-blink-and-you-miss’ turn of events.Out of nowhere Iniesta got hold of the ball and before you could blink, his sublime pass found Eto who blasted past Van Der Sar.Barcelona lead 1-0. The Catalans now were growing in confidence and even the red devils from Manchester were looking lackluster in front of them.All the speculation of Manu’s overdrive mode of football getting better of the Barca side had gone in the trash.

Quality of club finals are generally inversely proportional to the momentous situation as no side tries to be extravagant in their approach and tend to be a bit defensive.If you have this perception you better correct it.Barcelona is not such side.Their style of football is like the symphony by Mozart.They flow like a rivulet – pure,clean,brisk.

Many fans also termed this encounter as the personal battle between Ronaldo and Messi.Undoubtedly Messi was the winner.No disrespect to ‘Ron’ but ‘Messiah’ was spectacular and he showed his inexplicable brilliance throughout the game.The pinnacle came in 70^th minute when the 5 feet 7 inches tall Messi showed the world that he is no less lethal in the air as well, as he headed past the ManU goalkeeper.It was game over for the team from Manchester and their millions of supporters.And the Catalans became the King of Europe.The TITANS of Europe.

And Aadi and I embraced each other in joy as if our own teams(Arsenal and Chelsea respectively) were champions now .

I hope and I dream, there is always next time.

The Emirates Redemption

It was a battle between 22 souls on the ground and millions out of it who in times not so yore had lost in the race to be the TITANS of Europe.Both sides had to prove their character , their mettle and give their fans something to rejoice.While Arsenal was brutally eliminated by Manchester United, Barcelona needed a divine interference to oust Chelsea.

The encounter began at the stadia de emirates and as always the “GOONERS” started in a style they are synonymous to.The men in blue found themselves confused in a manner which has become quite a habit of theirs this year.And then came the blitzkrieg, the Arsenal onslaught.Attack after attack, they kept testing the Chelsea defense.I am a Chelsea fan(BIG!!) but I would not hide my feelings for Arsenal.I just adore their brisk paced emasculate passing which leaves opponents dumfounded.And I wish and hope of a day when Chelsea will have same skills complemented by its present conversion ratio.

Somebody once said “Attempts are not worth if they are not producing results”.Nobody ever said this.I just wrote it .And same is the case with Arsenal.They mesmerize their fans and haunt their opponents attack after attack.But one thing which is needed to win,“GOAL” eludes them terribly.I wonder how often Arsenal start a game as if they are playing against a team from our very own NFL(No, don’t tell me that you don’t know what NFL is…shame on you …go find out..) and how seldom they end up on the same high.Same was the case on Sunday as well, they left Chelsea open mouthed from the word go.But they couldn’t just score.And finally after 90 minutes they lost 1 – 4.

Chelsea on the other hand after stumbling in the start regained composure and showed brilliance on the field though not as often as Arsenal did.But being a Chelsea fan I am proud of the fact that they can definitely score whenever given the slightest of the opportunity.One thing I am certain after Sundays game is that Chelsea’s defense is in the right “LEGS”(hands) .If Arsenal are impressive with their passing and brisk paced beautiful football,Chelsea are brilliant when it comes to set pieces and when the ball is in air.The first goal resulted as a combination of above mentioned factors.Assassin – Alex ,Victim – Arsenal.The next blow to Arsenal came from a single handed brilliance of Anelka(ex-arsenal graduate) who just got through Fabianski with his power and pace.Probably giving the newer breed at Arsenal a lesson or two in scoring.The third was an own goal by Toure And the death blow came from Malouda.And thus the tale at Emirates ended with faces,some with tears and frustration and some with joy and relief.

The score line though does not truly reflect the competition on the ground.And I feel for Arsenal for not scoring more goals.And I strongly believe that something big needs to be done And I don’t know what.Probably they have the right person to handle this.But sooner they do it the better it will be for them.

The footballing season for both these teams have almost ended now.While Arsenal are going through a drought of 4 years without a silver ware,Chelsea still have a chance in FA cup final against Everton.

Blue is the color..Chelsea is the name….Go on Chelsea gulp the “TOFFIES”.

Heart break at the Bridge as the Blue Titanic sank

If you are a blues fan, Wednesday night would be a night,you would never want to experience again.As time would etch on the pages of football history,it was as if that flawless chocolate brownie which was about to melt in your mouth was snatched out of it.And Rome seemed out of bounds.A disaster, a real heart break at the Stamford Bridge.

After out-muscling the red devils from Liverpool, Chelsea and the men in blue reached the semi-final of the champions league awaited by the catlan giants Barcelona who have now become a synonym of footballing excellence after Pep Guardiola took over as their manager.While on the other hand Chelsea after starting the season miserably were re-organizing under Guus Hiddink.

The first leg was played at Barcelona’s home ground , at the Nou Camp.Right from the word go,Chelsea were out-thought,out-played in every department of the game.And if you ask me,being a Chelsea supporter how was I feeling through the course of the game.The one liner from my side would be I came to know that the mountain was un-treatable.Never the less at the end of 90 minutes we managed a tame draw.And at last the feeling was Thank GOD!!..it is over..huh!!..

After the game Chelsea and their game plan was alleged to have acted as the exponents of dull, boring and negative football.As they never attacked not even on the counters and all the eleven players were defending.But I don’t think so.It is not because I am a die hard blues fan and I am being partial.And even if I am partial.. so what?? If Barcelona felt that they deserved to win , they should have scored but they couldn’t even once get past chec.The mercurial quartet of Henry,Messi,Eto and Iniesta was blunted.So I think the draw was a bitter pill to swallow for the catalans and so came their remarks out of frustration.

Now came the all important night of 6th May,the night of the second leg of the champions league semi-finals at Stamford Bridge, the home ground of Chelsea.

The men in blue started on a positive note as suggested by their manager in the pre-match conference.While Barca were as ever majestic in their technical excellence of passing the ball like a spider web,but they never manged to enter the penalty area threatening the Chelsea defence.On the other hand Chelsea not so frequent in their attacks were proving very threatening whenever they did.And it took just 9 minutes for the entire Stamford Bridge to jump out of their seats in joy, unimaginable.So did I.I jumped out of my bean bag,screaming so loud that my throat is still aching.It was Lampard’s chip which got deflected from the Barca’s defence and bounced to Essien and the BISON took no time in dispatching it under the bar, crashing into the net.It was a breathtaking ,vicious left footer from Essien that showed the world that the Catalans are not the only epitome of footballing prowess.

Everything was under control and the men in blue were cruising quite confidently, leading 1-0.And the 90 minutes ended.Now only 4 added minutes of injury time had to be seen through.Now only 90 seconds left.

And then the disaster happened.Andres Iniesta scored one of the most valuable goals for his team and led it to champions league final.It was a pass from Messi and the Spanish midfielder struck the unstoppable shot in the top right corner of the Chelsea net.And the Blue Titanic sank at the bridge.It was a heartbreak for me and every Chelsea supporter world over.We lost and the wait has already begun for next year.You know ..why..I cannot help it.I will win it someday.

It was very disappointing that Chelsea didn’t finish it.And every one can be very critical of that.But no one who saw that match would ever deny the fact that almost 3 penalties in favors of Chelsea were denied.And the bald referee acted like absolute moron.The blues supporters may rant endlessly about the chances turned down but the fact is that now it will not be reverted and we will have to wait for the next year.

We will paint the world BLUE.Go on CHELSEA.GOD SPEED!
