Microsoft has been hyping this big feature for quite some time for IE 9, but looks like Google is again ahead of Microsoft. GPU acceleration might come to Google Chrome 7 before Internet Explored 9 appears. The latest Chromium builds could now send some of the description directly to the GPU, which result in better performance and less CPU strain. The best part here is that the GPU acceleration is not just limited to 3D content; some 2D operations could as well take advantage of the new feature.

Vangelis Kokkevis, Software Engineer at Google, wrote -

For some time now, there’s been a lot of work going on to overhaul Chromium’s graphics system,

New APIs and markup like WebGL and 3D CSS transforms are a major motivation for this work, but it also lets Chromium begin to take advantage of the GPU to speed up its entire drawing model, including many common 2D operations such as compositing and image scaling, he added.

At its core, this graphics work relies on a new process (yes, another one) called the GPU process. The GPU process accepts graphics commands from the renderer process and pushes them to OpenGL or Direct3D (via ANGLE),” he explained.

The original technology is now in place. If you run the recent Chromium build with the –enable-accelerated-compositing flag, then you would notice the GPU process running along with all of the regular ones. This is the process that would further handle all of the hardware acceleration, be it 2D or 3D, while yet keeping the web pages locked away in the sandbox. Chromium teams also desire to move even more of the rendering off the CPU and onto the GPU that should result in a vital performance boost.

Google Chrome has truly come a very long way since its inception. Today Chrome is several times faster, boasts loads of new features and also entering in competition with Firefox when it comes to Extensions. Chrome came up with the idea of extensions in late last year, which was the most wanted feature by users. Many users are still afraid to switch from Firefox to Chrome because of less add-on comparatively. But it goes without saying that ever since Chrome introduced extension support, its users are as eager as anyone to add new features to the browser. Now when the Google Chrome extension is more than 6 months old and is growing steadily it would be a nice idea to review which add-on are more popular among users. With that in mind, honeytechblog did a latest review (to date) on Top 10 Google Chrome Extensions.

1. Adblock

1,208,268 users – Weekly installs: 116,962

Your favorite feature in Firefox finally comes to Chrome! Block all advertisements on all web pages. Your browser is automatically updated with additions to the filter: just click Install, then visit your favorite website and see the ads disappear.

2. Google Mail Checker

650,543 users – Weekly installs: 47,547

Use Internet Explorer to display web pages in a Chrome tab. Some sites can only be displayed using IE, and with this extension you can now see those sites without leaving Chrome.
407,320 users – Weekly installs: 32,652

This extension translates entire webpages into a language of your choice with one click. This extension adds a button to your browser toolbar. Click the translate icon whenever you want to translate the page you’re visiting. The extension also automatically detects if the language of a page you’re on is different from the language you’re using for your Google Chrome interface. If it is, a banner appears at the top of the page. Click the Translate button in the banner to have all the text on the page appear in the new language.

Access the Downloads window directly from the toolbar. Quickly access the downloads window by clicking the icon instead of taking the “long way” (Tools/Downloads). Very useful for those who download a lot.

9. Cooliris

348,990 users – Weekly installs: 37,845

Cooliris transforms your browser into a full-screen 3D Wall for searching, viewing and sharing the Web. This version of Cooliris works on Windows. Linux and Mac versions coming soon. Chrome will display a warning when you install any extension that includes a plugin. The Cooliris extension includes a plugin that requires access to your graphics card in order to render the high-performance 3D Wall.

10. Google Mail Checker Plus

302,429 users – Weekly installs: 23,878

Displays the number of unread messages in your Gmail and Google Apps inbox. Preview mail, read, delete, archive and mark as spam! 10 different icon sets, choose your favorite! Mail preview window, read mail without leaving the current tab. Delete, archive, spam, star and mark as read functionality. Desktop and sound notifications when new mail arrives. Google Apps For Your Domain support and more.

When it comes to Firefox extensions there are two drawbacks, one is hard to pick few best ones from the lot and other drawback is that some of the add-ons are created, but has no use and many are not updated so will not work with latest edition of Firefox. Well, it’s not the same in case of Chrome, as it carry less add-ons for now and are of great use.

Easier the compare with the usage numbers. Firefox possess more than two billion add-on downloads to date. The browser is five year old, Chrome’s most popular extension is used by 1.1 million people and gets 113,000 plus new downloads every week. The most popular add-on for Firefox gets about 884,000 downloads every week. It has been downloaded by 89 plus million people. So it looks like, scale wise, Chrome still has a lot of catching up to do.

Today, Google is a huge company with several dozen outstanding products, yet it always strives hard for better future plans. Past year – 2009 has been exciting for the giant with couple of interesting release such as Google wave, preview of Google voice, introduced Chrome OS and Google Public DNS to name a few. So what does Google has in mind for 2010? Of course one interesting release waiting is the Google Phone – Nexus one, but then there is lot more to come from the entire team that can make our lives easy and exhilarating. Here is the Top 5 product that Google may plans to launch in 2010.

1. Google Phone – Nexus One -

By now you already know that Nexus One is the upcoming Google Phone and the great news is that it would be debuted anytime now in the Android Press Meeting. Nexus One is expected to display the latest generation of Linux-based open source Android operating system. In fact, this is also first phone that will be marketed directly by Google, in turn setting up extremely higher expectations for the product. Engadget has already reviewed the phone before the launch and it beings some interesting set of information you might link to know. The phone is also said to bring tough competition for Apple iPhone.

2. Google’s Caffeine Search Engine -

Caffeine is the next version of Google’s search-engine infrastructure and will soon be available to the wider audience. Caffeine engine is expected to offer technology to deliver faster and more accurate results. This version was available for test and there is no specific date for launch given yet, but Google is sure to develop it fully in early 2010. The reason for not releasing it in 2009 was thoroughly explained by Matt cuts. As soon as the search engine release the first threat will directly be on Microsoft’s Bing.

3. Google’s Ebook Store -

Google has always been fond of books and have encouraged it reader to take part often. With that love Google now plans to launch an online store for ebooks, which is expected to come in the first half of 2010. Google Ebook store will have half a million books initially in partner will few publishers. On the launch it is expected to have more than 500,000 books ready to be purchased from online stores such as Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com. This interesting ebook store will be a strong completion to Amazon’s Kindle, which is today the most popular ereader.

4. Google Chrome OS -

Google Chrome Brower was a great hit and recently it also moved ahead of Apple Safari. And next in store we have Google Chrome OS – an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted only at netbooks. Google has planned to open-source its code, and will make Google Chrome OS available to users in the second half of 2010. According the giant, speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. This OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems.

5. Google Drive – GDrive

Users usually have complained of not having enough space for them to store emails, photos, and files. With that in mind, Google came up the idea of Gdrive included in Google pack – online file backup and storage service from Google that integrated with Google services like Gmail, Picasa Web Albums, Google Calendars, and many others. GDrive allows you to access your files from anywhere, anytime, and from any device – be it from your desktop, web browser or cellular phone. Google Drive is highly anticipated and expected to be released in 2010 but it will only be an extended version of Google Docs. Instead of sending attachments, you’ll be able to upload files to Google Drive from Gmail.

Also check out other interesting predictions for Google in 2010 listed out by Google Operating System, which is fun to check out. Although there would be more products coming up this year by Google, these 5 are certain to take place. If you predict more launches from Google, then feel free to share with us via comment

What is my IP is a Google Chrome Bookmarklet plugin for the instant checking of the IP address of the network.

What is Ip address? An IP address (Internet Protocol Address) is a logical address of a network adapter. The IP address is unique and identifies computers on a network. An IP address can be private, for use on a LAN, or public, for use on the Internet or other WAN. Via Wikipedia

How to install Google Chrome Bookmarklet plugin?

It is very simple and fast to have this option under your bookmark menus. First of all you need to cross check that your Google Chrome browser always shows the Bookmarks bar. In order to enable it you need to go TOOL menu on the right, click menu: Tools -> Always show bookmarks bar. The below image describe it best.

You can install the What is my IP by any of two options:

1.Drag and drop What is my IP in your bookmarks bar

2.Go to bookmarks bar, Right click and add a page like below image describes

The above options will bring a bookmarks manager and you can enter the following details into it Name and URL fields

Name : What is my IP

URL:

javascript:void(window.open(
"http://www.honeytechblog.com/ip/ip.php",
"What%20is%20My%20IP","width=300,
height=100,top=0,left=0,location=0"))

So, you can easily check the IP on a single click over the What is my IP bookmark.

Update: You can also download the Google Chrome extension for checking IP
which is working of Google Chrome developers and beta versions.

Google is one of the biggest companies in the Internet today. It has been popular because of its search engine. Despite its size and popularity the company also has its own list of mistakes. Here are the top 10 mistakes of Google.

Google Finance is so US centered, you cannot find good information about other countries. There are competitions that are far better like Yahoo Finance.Felix Salmon questioned “Is Google Too Big To Fail?”.According to a blogpost “Minor disadvantages of Google Finance are that it doesn’t show all the popular ratios that Yahoo does, such as the PEG. For foreign stocks, it shows profit margin and operating margin information, but not the P/E or P/S”

Google Checkout is yet another mistake from Google. It is half-baked and it is so limited. Why should people use this when you have Paypal which offers more options. You check some advantages and disadvantages of Google Checkout vs Paypal.

Picasa is a good photo manager but Picasa Web album is definitely a bad idea. The user interface is confusing.I personally like to spend $25 on Flickr Pro rather than using Picasa.

Google Web Accelerator is another bad product from Google. It has many privacy issues. It also causes problems with some websites not loading properly.37signals reports in fact that the Google Web Accelerator “Google is essentially clicking every link on the page — including links like “delete this” or “cancel that.” And to make matters worse, Google ignores the Javascript confirmations“.Moreover checkout some “Hard facts about Google’s Web Accelerator”.

Google Video is also a bad idea. It did not feature popular TV shows. And it is so slow.Have a look on Why Google Video Will Fail and

Google Desktop is posing security threats among users. The software pulls personal data from your PC.

There are too many instant messaging software out there. Google Talk is too late.More over foxnews recently discloses that ‘ViddyHo’ Virus Spreads Through Google Chat”.In case you have the time ,look over the some interesting facts about Google Talk.

<del>Gmail is recently experiencing outage and account inaccessibility. Is happens from time to time and Google has not yet addressed it until now. This will definitely tarnish the image of Google.</del>You may check about the latest problem of gmail here. Stan Schroeder of Mashable published an article stating “gmail down panic mode on”.

<del>Google Maps is another brilliant concept but it can also help terrorists with bad intentions do their strategic planning.May be you should know that “Terrorist Use of Google Earth Raises Security Fears” and “Google Maps aids terrorists”.Every technology have its own flaws but it can also be recovered.Their are so many severe questions on national securities. For example latest mumbai bomb blast terrorist “Kasab” is in arthur road jail so will google remove arthur road from its map?</del>

<del>The Chrome is yet another web browser. Who needs another one? Google already partnered with Mozilla for the Firefox so there’s no point in adding another web browser.John Brandon says that “Is Chrome the first epic fail at Google?”You should also read the chrome fail discussion on the reddit.More over this is the comment from a user in a Google groups</del>

<del>I just updated Google Chrome to the latest version, RC 1 i.e. non-</del>
<del> beta. And now my Gtalk within Orkut states that it doesn’t work with</del>
<del> this browser. Come on, both are Google products… They should work</del>
<del> better together, not fail on such an epic scale.</del>

Update: Google is continuously working on project “chrome” and come up with some new features. I wish to remove this point after extensions updates in the Chrome final release. (on beta and developer versions it have extensions features and we also developed Google Chrome Extensions for Gtalk , checking IP and Speed Test )

Last but not least newowin.net say’s that “Google to kill 6 of its failed projects” these are listed as follows:

Google Video

Google Catalog Search

Google Notebook

Dodgeball

Jaiku

Google Mashup Editor

The top 10 mistakes of Google are easy to correct. With the way the company works these can be done within months.I just remember this quote (find in a webmaster forum )

Google seem to want to be the next Yahoo and Yahoo seem to want to be the next Google

Note:Help and suggestions to improve this articles are always invited.

Update on 18 march,2009:

Google Lively is addition in the list of Google fails.
About Google Lively : Lively was a network of avatars and virtual rooms created and decorated by its users. Google launched Lively on July 8, 2008 as an experiment in providing people with more ways to express themselves on the Web.

For those who don’t know about Chrome

Google Chrome is a browser that combines a best use of system memory and as a result of minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier.

So if you don’t want to get chromed and wants to unchromed ( i.e don’t want to get identify by the google chrome) then here is an application named UnChrome. This application was designed to remove the unique ID that allowing identifying of your sytem.

How It works

It replaces your unique ID with Null values so that your browser cannot be identified any longer. The functionality of Google Chrome is not influenced by this. You only need to apply UnChrome only once.

How To Apply Unchrome

Close the Google Chrome

Download this application

Install the unchrome application

Now your chrome installation is anonymized

This is the first beta version of Chrome, having some bugs so a new version of Google Chrome is rolling out soon. Now How to update Google Chrome ?

You can easily updates the chrome from the “About Google Chrome” to check if new version is available.

Apart from apllication update google also steps into updating Chrome’s terms of service - from google’s blog

Gogle says “You’ll notice if you look at our other products that many of them are governed by Section 11 of our Universal Terms of Service. This section is included because, under copyright law, Google needs what’s called a “license” to display or transmit content. So to show a blog, we ask the user to give us a license to the blog’s content. (The same goes for any other service where users can create content.) But in all these cases, the license is limited to providing the service. In Gmail, for example, the terms specifically disclaim our ownership right to Gmail content.”

Revised text of Section 11

11. Content license from you

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services
