Novice Internet surfers are eager to explore World Wide Web known for researching, shopping, communicating and enjoying the media. And then there are evil waiting to trap these greenhorns and make money out of it. Identity theft, Email Spamming, Chat Room etc are some of the common traps people fall in to. But that doesn’t mean one should avoid using Internet, as today most of us keep in touch with friends, family, and locate cool places or news by Internet. One only needs to be careful while surfing Internet in order to save time and to remain at the safer side. If you are someone wanting to start your web journey then make a note of these common mistakes to avoid when surfing online.

Avoid login on third party applications which require email logins.

Avoid accessing account through any email link as it can be risky. If the email turns out to be fraudulent then cyber criminal will have access to your account information.

Avoid having single password or PINs for accessing all your online accounts, this can again lead to identity theft.

Avoid using unsafe site that does not come with term ‘https‘. The “S” stands for secure and you should always make note of it before accessing any site.

Avoid clicking on pop-ups that says “Your Pc is Insecure”, such links can have malware automatically downloaded to your PC.

Avoid downloading free stuffs such as screen saver and those stupid smiley faces. Such things are very dangerous to your PC and you will soon notice it has turned slow then earlier. Sites like download.com are safe to use.

Be careful with those phishing mails, they may create a sense of urgency as “Your Account is in Risk” or an “Unauthorized transaction has taken place” so send your account details. Remember any bank will not ask your account detail via mail.

Make sure you always have updated antivirus software in place.

Always check with your bank if they have any additional security for your online transactions, such as IPIN’s or Zero liability card.

Always have your CC details save in real world. Do not share it with anybody via sending mails or over even on telephone.

Never forget to delete the system’s cache, passwords or history, it could easily lead to identity theft and stolen bank and email information.

You have won a lottery and or an IPod are the common terms used by spammers to trap you, avoid falling to such traps.

Always blacklist the spammers you come across in mails without just deleting the spam mails.

Don’t ever click on the Close window without logging of your account especially if you are at cybercafé for accessing Internet then you are more at risk.

Always have a back up for your emails just as how you keep a hard copy of your important docs and other things.

Avoid believing in those brainless “Microsoft Is Sharing Its Fortune” kind of mail, they are just spammers requiring your details to trouble you more.

Always have a habit of not clicking on phishing email, the goal of phisher is to fool you for entering your details into something that actually appears to be safe and secure, but in reality is just a fake site set up by the scammer.

Avoid giving your full name, home address, phone number, Social Security number, passwords, names of family members, credit card numbers online. Best is to remain anonymous and enjoy surfing

Never forget to scan the attachment you receive in your mail box. Virus attacks are mostly through such attachments.

Social networking sites are something we cannot avoid these days, yet it is always secure to follow known person on Twitter or to add on Facebook. Don’t forget to do security check if you tend to add unknown person.

This article intends to offer you basic information on how you can be safe on Internet and enjoy surfing through it. We certainly don’t deserve to face problems when using Internet, so you just require knowing where the pitfalls are, use some common sense and caution, and you are safe. Good Luck!

Over smartness is defined as the excess tasks that can spoil the work and may outcomes as a negative results. Sometimes newcomers neglect the standard guidelines because they really don’t know about do’s and don’t s. Permanent banned from the Google Adsense due to excessive and intentional clicks is the most common example of the foolishness that people should avoid. There are many other reasons which should be considered carefully before indulging your excess labor over any websites and blogs. Most commonly people use Push and Pull Marketing for the websites and blog promotion but you should also need to avoid few blackball listed as follows:

1. Can i use hidden text or hidden links in the webpage?

No, you should avoid using hidden text or hidden links as you are not supposed to be a KGB agent. Hidden texts and links are the illegal way which is considered as the suspicious activity by the most of the Search engine spiders and renowned ad networks.

2.My page have Malware and Trojans in the form of suspicious scripts.

You should cross check your server regularly to avoid the malicious activities of XSS (cross site scripting ) which may install the viruses and Trojans in the form of iframes. This kind of activity leads to immediate and permanent banned from the google.

3.What if i used immense amount of same contents on different pages , sub folders, sub domains to get the better and more search engine indexing.

You should avoid creating sub-domains ,multiple pages or different domains with substantially duplicate or similar contents as Google seriously consider the duplicity of contents and results downgrade of Page ranks.

4.What if i set up affiliate sites to earn more money?

Your affiliate site should be meaningful for the Google bots and should not contain useless and spam’s links. On the other hand if the content of your affiliate pages is meaningful, unique and have valued for the users then it will automatically gains the value in the Google results.

5.What if i use automated applications , SEO tricks and software’s to get the better Google results ?

You may be smart but Google have all the authority to detects the queries coming into their servers so avoid using automated applications to get indexed in the google. Some of the applications like WebPosition Gold is officially banned from the Google.

Here is the snip of WebPosition and Google history by webmasterworld member webmama

Penalise you for using webpostion gold: (April 2003)

Google and position checking software: (Jan 2003)

Whats the status of Google vs WPG Users? (July 2002)

What exactly gets banned using WebPositionGold; the website or the IP (June 2004)

Web Position Gold & Google IP bans (May 2009)

6. What if i’m accused of Keyword stuffing ?

Keyword stuffing is another illegal activity to load the webpage for intentional motive of higher search results and rankings. You should avoid following keyword stuffing over your webpage and if you are the victim then you should properly clean you page with irrelevant keywords and contents and try to submit your site for reconsideration.

7. What if i buy the paid links and secretly try to increase the page ranks using different activities and link schemes?

The best way to get the good page ranks is the quality contents of your website. Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is strictly considered by the Google bots. Matts Cutts recently described the whole process behind the PageRank sculpting which calculate the page ranks.

8. What if my site URI is very awkward and not SEO friendly ?

In case you website or CMS have very awkward URI’s like youdomain.com/?id=27%S?=23456%ssd?=1235 then this will create a –ve effect on the search engine indexing as compare to friendly URI’s like yourdomain.com/sample-post-name.html. You can use mod_rewrite RewriteRule Generator for SEF (Search engine friendly) Urls.

Last but not least, a simple ,lighter and faster webpage is considers to be greater rather than the lengthy and heavy pages with lots of http requests, css and script files. You can easily optimize website loading time and performance as it will effects the bounce rates and rankings. Matt Cutts properly describe the future of web predicted by Google in this video

Most of the confused souls on choosing efficient webhosting company are the new guys who desired to shift their blogs from wordpress.com or blogspot.com. These guys don’t have enough knowledge and often seeks for the consultations of the experts. Few fortunate enough gets the consultations from friends and social networks like twitter. From the last 3 years I deals with more than 10-20 hosting companies and also help few to established their sub hosting unit as a reseller accounts.

Mistakes : If you consider that Space and Bandwidth is the main feature for choosing a webhosting company then you are running under blunder. Space and Bandwidth plays 20% part in choosing the right webhosting. There are many other factors which predict the performance of the hosting. These factors are described as follows:

Up Time: Server uptime is most important factors. Unlike local hosting providers, hosting should have 100% up-time. Most of the best data centers like planet claims to provide 99 % up time warranty.

CPU Limits: CPU limit is the most crucial factors for high traffic websites. If you plans to shift your host just because of high traffic then you must keep in mind to check for their maximum allowed process limits. Normally due to lack of this you often face the “Interner Server Errors” – 400 pages. I personally faced this issue so telling you on the basis of personal experience.

cPanel : Control Panel is the most common feature of the hosting. In case you are on the windows hosting having Plesk Panel then you must checkup for automated applications, traffic manager, database management applications and other basic things. Personally i liked the cpanel.

Support: This is the most confident feature of the webhosting providers. Some time you messed up with the dedicated sites then support should quickly respond to your queries. Support should be quick chat support or mail/ticketing system.

Money matter the most: Yeah, money matter but set up your few above described bench mark and then decide the hosting providers offering all the things under minimum budgets.

Established data center: I consider that you all known with the term data center. Data center are the place where your the web server is located actually. You should clear on the fact that data center is safe and secure with all types of dangers like flood, fire and accidents. Of course it is not supposed to be first floor of your building or in your bed room.

Accepted user policy (AUP) and the Terms of service (TOS): About 90% of the internet users don’t give a dam about the certificates , TOS or any policies. Webhosting TOS is unlike the software you are supposed to install in next – next clicks. You should aware of the things like hosting company is responsible of any data loss / data theft . It is recommended that you should read the Accepted user policy(AUP) before buying hosting.

Now you are confused that some friend suggest the DreamHost and some suggest any other. I would recommend that you should consider the above described points before going for any hosting provides.

Suggestions: In case you have a blog then you should go for Hostgator baby plan and if it have quite healthy traffic then you should go for Hostgator Business plan.

Shared hosting have their own limits in case you are earning more than $1000 from your blog and have more than 5millions of monthly page views then i will recommend for the dedicated servers or Virtual private servers (VPS).

DRM stands for digital rights management, and it is a method used to protect the many digital files on the Internet from possible copyright theft. With the huge number of images, audio, and video files on the web that continues to multiply each day, the danger of unauthorized downloading of copyrighted material is rife. DRM is one way to protect these files from copyright theft.

However, DRM can also be misused. People who have paid to have a copy of a certain file, like an e-book for instance, and who would like to print out their own hard copy for easier access will find that they are unable to because of the DRM protection that prevents them from doing so. It is almost like purchasing something that one cannot use, which is one of the disadvantageous characteristics of DRM.

Another example is when anyone who has made a home movie of a family occasion, such as a birthday party, would like to put in some background music to accompany the video. This person will be prevented from using popular songs or even a theme from a television show because of DRM, in effect curtailing freedom of expression due to copyright limitations.

This conflict between DRM and freedom of communication is very clear. For fear of losing profit due to illegal copying, big media companies have seriously restricted the copying of almost all forms of electronic communication that involves images, audio and video.

Some DRM naysayers say abusing this copyright law violates the First Amendment on freedom of speech and expression. While this is not catastrophic in the extreme, clearly the proponents of DRM will need to find a way around this conflict.

Its a viral video by supernews where they try to drag the tweeps into reality. Now a days we are so much indulge in the twitter world just for the sake of answering a simple question “what we are doing?”. It force us to aside of our daily work?.Recently zdnet reveals in a article that Google Head Calls Twitter “Poor Man’s E-mail System”.It is very ironical to note that after the incident google starts its own twitter account and says .

Twitter’s success is wonderful, and I think it shows you that there are many, many new ways to reach and communicate, especially if you are willing to do so publicly.

This is a quite real video which reveals the feel of a newbies when he encounter with the twitter.Ultimately he says to all the tweeps (tweeter people)

Actually you have no friends, its just a waste of time.

Twitter is a waste of the time if you are not making anything out of it.I just remember the Darren Rowse words that

My response is simple – yes it is.

Twitter is a waste of time…. unless you use it in a way that isn’t.

Twitter can be a waste of time just like blogging can be a waste of time.

Twitter can be a waste of time just like going to conferences and talking to people face to face can be a waste of time.

Twitter can be a waste of time just like other micro-blogging/life streaming/social messaging tools like Plurk and FriendFeed.

Twitter can be a waste of time just like talking on the phone can be a waste of time.

Conclusion: I don’t think it is the waste of time unless and until you mean what you are doing. It is my source of tracking the buzz, getting hot news and most important i don’t read newspaper instead i would like to read rss and tweeter timeline.Secondly twitter is my another way of getting traffic and few of my post like “ Top 250 list of twitter clones sites” drags more than 10 thousands of pages views for me.So i’m openly asking you a question is it a problem? or is the way you feel it like a problem?

Bill Gates is considered as a great man. Many people look up to him. And a lot of people are inspired by his life. But then again like any other human being he also has his own mistakes. Here are the top 10 mistakes of Bill Gates.

The man created a software monopoly and in return he got so many lawsuits for it.Bill Gates is still fighting with lawsuits. The source on wikipedia clearly stated that

United States v. Microsoft was a set of consolidated civil actions filed against Microsoft Corporation on May 18, 1998 by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) and 20 U.S. states. Joel I. Klein was the lead prosecutor. The trial started on May 18, 1998 with the U.S. Justice Department and the Attorneys General of twenty U.S. states suing Microsoft for illegally thwarting competition in order to protect and extend its software monopoly.

Bill Gates did not consider opensource. His business strategies always counter opensource principles and paradigm. You may be interested in his open-source debate In a Fortune magazine he clearly says that

It’s easier for our software to compete with Linux when there’s piracy than when there’s not.

The Windows OS made Mr. Gates the richest man in the world. But its latest iteration is bombarded with lots of negative criticisms.

He allowed Windows Mobile to happen. Did he run out of innovative ideas so he settled for a miniature Windows OS for mobile phone. He could have put up a team to design the OS from ground up.

He let DOS die. It was a promising OS and a very stable one.

Bill Gates did not think of cloud computing probably because of his proprietary Windows OS. But this is definitely one of his biggest mistakes.

He allowed Windows Millennium edition to be released. The OS was definitely a reflection of the lack of talents from Microsoft. It failed the expectation of the people. It was premature.

He ignored search. Look what happened to Google now. Bill Gates already made some moves about search in the end of the 90s and it was definitely a mistake to trash it.Scobleizer once revealed in his post that

Look at my last post. Now read this one over on LiveSide. It’s a short report that Microsoft executives are bragging to MVPs that “we’re in it to win.”

I don’t think Microsoft is. The words are empty. Microsoft’s Internet execution sucks (on whole). Its search sucks. Its advertising sucks (look at that last post again). If that’s “in it to win” then I don’t get it. I saw a bunch of posts similar to the one on LiveSide coming out of the MVP Summit. I didn’t post any of them to my link blog for a reason: All were air, no real demonstrations of how Microsoft is going to lead.

The Microsoft Zune is a mistake. A lot of money poured into its development but yet it did not yield enough profit.John Biggs from Crunchgear had a poetic post on “Who killed Microsoft?”.Some of the extract are as follows:

Who killed Microsoft? Why did all those jobs get lost?

“Not I,” said the Zune fanboy, “I got Zune, I’m no iToy Sure it didn’t do too much and too bad my girlfriend bought a Touch now we’re iTunes all the way what else do I have to say?”

The Xbox on the other hand is too pricey for a gaming console and because of this; people go for other brands- the cheaper ones. This is only reason why Xbox price set to drop in war with Sony’s PS3 and Nintendo’s top-selling Wii. Those are the top 10 mistakes of Bill Gates. These might be some of the negative side of the guy but these will never take away his greatness.

Google is one of the biggest companies in the Internet today. It has been popular because of its search engine. Despite its size and popularity the company also has its own list of mistakes. Here are the top 10 mistakes of Google.

Google Finance is so US centered, you cannot find good information about other countries. There are competitions that are far better like Yahoo Finance.Felix Salmon questioned “Is Google Too Big To Fail?”.According to a blogpost “Minor disadvantages of Google Finance are that it doesn’t show all the popular ratios that Yahoo does, such as the PEG. For foreign stocks, it shows profit margin and operating margin information, but not the P/E or P/S”

Google Checkout is yet another mistake from Google. It is half-baked and it is so limited. Why should people use this when you have Paypal which offers more options. You check some advantages and disadvantages of Google Checkout vs Paypal.

Picasa is a good photo manager but Picasa Web album is definitely a bad idea. The user interface is confusing.I personally like to spend $25 on Flickr Pro rather than using Picasa.

Google Web Accelerator is another bad product from Google. It has many privacy issues. It also causes problems with some websites not loading properly.37signals reports in fact that the Google Web Accelerator “Google is essentially clicking every link on the page — including links like “delete this” or “cancel that.” And to make matters worse, Google ignores the Javascript confirmations“.Moreover checkout some “Hard facts about Google’s Web Accelerator”.

Google Video is also a bad idea. It did not feature popular TV shows. And it is so slow.Have a look on Why Google Video Will Fail and

Google Desktop is posing security threats among users. The software pulls personal data from your PC.

There are too many instant messaging software out there. Google Talk is too late.More over foxnews recently discloses that ‘ViddyHo’ Virus Spreads Through Google Chat”.In case you have the time ,look over the some interesting facts about Google Talk.

<del>Gmail is recently experiencing outage and account inaccessibility. Is happens from time to time and Google has not yet addressed it until now. This will definitely tarnish the image of Google.</del>You may check about the latest problem of gmail here. Stan Schroeder of Mashable published an article stating “gmail down panic mode on”.

<del>Google Maps is another brilliant concept but it can also help terrorists with bad intentions do their strategic planning.May be you should know that “Terrorist Use of Google Earth Raises Security Fears” and “Google Maps aids terrorists”.Every technology have its own flaws but it can also be recovered.Their are so many severe questions on national securities. For example latest mumbai bomb blast terrorist “Kasab” is in arthur road jail so will google remove arthur road from its map?</del>

<del>The Chrome is yet another web browser. Who needs another one? Google already partnered with Mozilla for the Firefox so there’s no point in adding another web browser.John Brandon says that “Is Chrome the first epic fail at Google?”You should also read the chrome fail discussion on the reddit.More over this is the comment from a user in a Google groups</del>

<del>I just updated Google Chrome to the latest version, RC 1 i.e. non-</del>
<del> beta. And now my Gtalk within Orkut states that it doesn’t work with</del>
<del> this browser. Come on, both are Google products… They should work</del>
<del> better together, not fail on such an epic scale.</del>

Update: Google is continuously working on project “chrome” and come up with some new features. I wish to remove this point after extensions updates in the Chrome final release. (on beta and developer versions it have extensions features and we also developed Google Chrome Extensions for Gtalk , checking IP and Speed Test )

Last but not least newowin.net say’s that “Google to kill 6 of its failed projects” these are listed as follows:

The top 10 mistakes of Google are easy to correct. With the way the company works these can be done within months.I just remember this quote (find in a webmaster forum )

Google seem to want to be the next Yahoo and Yahoo seem to want to be the next Google

Besides gaining top traffic rank in alexa and popular as it may seem but Yahoo still has its own set of mistakes. The Yahoo website is cluttered with so many bits and pieces. This is not appealing to many people so they look for other search engine like Google. Moreover Here is a list of top 10 mistakes of Yahoo.

Microsoft deal controversy :They are too arrogant. They turned down Microsoft, it was a good deal for them but they did not accept the offer.

Unable to advantages of been old in the market : Few years ago they were the best search engine but then came Google; they got old and they never have enough efforts to regain dominance.

Lack of multi business model : They are trying to compete with Google Adsense. Why not think of other business model that can bring them in to the top of the game again.

Terry Semel is a mistake ? The guy doesn’t have the talent to lead the company. His track record will show that he is not the man for the job.

Lost the chance to take over Google : In initial days Google founders were looking for the investors. At that time after joining Yahoo, the company founders of yahoo (Jerry Yang and David Filo ) thinks of buying Google.Again Terry Semel had dinner conversation with Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.Semel propose for paying only $7 million annually on Google search technology. They replied that they wanted $1 billion and didn’t want to sell Google. Semel said he would consider the deal and need time to think about the price.Fortunately in another dinner and Semel agreed to the $1 billion but alas Larry Page and Sergey Brin replied back with a higher demand of $3 billion and didn’t want to sell.

Yahoo Music is a flop, they should have not ventured into the music selling business. It is too crowded.

Yahoo Messenger is now a portal for viruses. They have to do something about this or else people will look for alternatives and will turn away from YM.Yahoo messenger is quite popular and yahoo should consider this too be under their special Research and development labs.

They did not successfully venture into social networking.(Yahoo mash was another FAIL) – updated (thanks to kevin)

In the near future cloud computing will be the name of the game but Yahoo did not have any moves to conceptualize a cloud-computing environment.

Yahoo did not venture into the mobile phone business. It is one of the biggest gadgets today and in the future.People want to be free and mobile and yahoo should consider this seriously.

These mistakes will never stop the company from moving forward so there is still a bright future for Yahoo.

In case you are confused about the word DNS :

DNS usually stands for Domain Name System and refers to how computers find other computers on the Internet Network. Unique IP addresses are associated with each computer on the Internet Network. These IP addresses are like house numbers on a street. DNS is the system that make it possible for other computers to find your computer.

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical naming system for computers, services, or any resource participating in the Internet. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participants. Most importantly, it translates domain names meaningful to humans into the numerical (binary) identifiers associated with networking equipment for the purpose of locating and addressing these devices world-wide – Source Wikipedia

Their are many domain services in the market now a day’s. People often tends to buy cheaper domain but they forget the main feature DNS management

DNS management is a tool given by registrar of domain to change the name servers of your domains .Without DNS management you can’t change your name server.

Name server- is like ns457.hosgator.com , ns458.hostgator.com etc.

This points your domain to the server where ever you wanna host your site.

Imagine the situation if your server is damaged or expires, you want to change your site to another server but you doesn’t have DNS management tool. In case you don’t have any DNS MANAGEMENT then you need to drop mails to your registrar for manual change of the DNS. Generally this process doesn’t takes much time but it may take 1 hours to few days and you may trap into the loop of the heavy downtime. In the end you have to wait for the domain registrar to change your simple DNS.

Some more features of the DNS Management are as follows:

In simple words web-Based DNS Management tools allows you to use name servers located at yourdomain.com

CNAME – Canonical records to change CNAME entries

MX – Mail Server records

NS – Name Server Records

Note:-Honeytechblog use the hostgator servers as my primary hosting and will recommend it for all. If you want to know something else regarding this topic feel free to bother me in comments.
